Welcome back to the AI Odyssey! In this review, I explore whether VEED, the online video editing platform, is worth using. Today, I dive into one of its features: the Create Clips tool. Is it a game-changer for content creators, or does it fall short? Let’s find out.
What is VEED?
VEED is an online video editing tool that offers a variety of features, from automatic subtitles to AI-powered video creation. My initial reason for trying VEED was to translate subtitles, but I soon discovered their limitations in this area. However, I decided to explore the platform further, and today, I’m testing the ‘Create Clips’ function.
Testing the Create Clips Tool
VEED’s Create Clips tool allows users to extract highlights from longer videos automatically. You can upload a video directly, or even grab one from YouTube. The tool then analyzes the content and generates short clips based on key moments. I uploaded my own five-minute video to see how well it works.
The Process
- Uploading the Video – I dragged and dropped my file onto VEED. While uploading, I was able to select settings for captions, language, and clip length (15, 30, or 60 seconds).
- Clip Generation – It took around four minutes to generate clips from my five-minute video.
- The Results – VEED presented a 21-second clip with performance indicators like flow, impact, clarity, and relevance. A transcript of the clip was also displayed.
The Good and the Bad
Pros:
- Saves Time – Instead of manually searching through footage, VEED quickly selects clips for you.
- Subtitles Auto-Adjust – When editing, captions move along with the clip, which isn’t always the case in traditional editing software like Premiere Pro.
- Good for Social Media – If you need quick clips for promotional content, VEED does the job efficiently.
Cons:
- Limited Editing Options – You can edit the selected clip, but only within the generated snippet. You can’t modify the start point manually.
- Vertical Formatting Issues – If the original video is landscape, VEED doesn’t adjust for lost details in a vertical format.
- Navigation Challenges – Returning to previous selections isn’t intuitive; I had to restart the process to adjust my choices.
Testing VEED with Different Video Types
To push VEED further, I tested it with different types of content:
- Technical Presentation – The tool did a decent job selecting key moments.
- Political Speech – I uploaded a speech from the Munich Security Conference. VEED recognized and clipped relevant sections, but some words were cut off unexpectedly.
- Movie Clips – Attempting to clip an Italo Western proved challenging due to copyright restrictions. However, a promotional compilation from Amazon MGM worked well, and VEED selected some compelling moments—although it prioritized spoken dialogue over cinematic visuals.
Final Verdict: Is VEED Worth It?
VEED’s Create Clips tool is useful for content creators who need quick clips from dialogue-heavy videos. It’s not perfect—there are limitations in customization and format handling—but if your goal is to rapidly generate short clips for social media, it’s a solid option.
Would I recommend it for professional video editing? Not really. VEED is best suited for casual content creators, marketers, or anyone who wants to save time selecting highlights.
Stay tuned for my next episode, where I’ll explore more of VEED’s features!
